We all develop little workarounds for things around the house. “Pull the handle up, push the door with your shoulder, wiggle the key a bit.” You might think this is just one of those quirks your door has.

Actually, it’s a warning sign that something’s not right.

The “Dropped Door” Problem

I was working on a lock replacement in Fulwood a few months back when a neighbour came over and asked if I could take a quick look at her composite door. She said it was becoming incredibly difficult to close, and she was worried the lock had worn out.

Turns out, she didn’t need a new lock at all. She just needed a proper hinge adjustment.

Over time, heavy modern doors can drop by a few millimetres. It’s caused by a combination of gravity, thermal expansion (doors swell and shrink with temperature changes), and general wear on the hinges. The door might look fine, but those few millimetres make a big difference to how the locking mechanism works.

When the door drops, the locking points (the hooks and bolts along the edge) no longer line up perfectly with the holes in the frame. So when you lift the handle, you’re not just engaging the lock. You’re physically dragging the entire weight of the door back into alignment using the delicate internal gearbox mechanism.

The Fix: Toe and Heeling

Adjusting UPVC and composite door hinges is something I do several times a week. It’s called “toe and heeling,” and it involves making small adjustments to the hinge screws to shift the door back into the correct position.

For this particular customer in Fulwood, it took me about 15 minutes.

The result? The door now clicks shut smoothly with one finger. No forcing, no shoulder-barging, no wiggling the key around.

The benefit? There’s no more stress on the gearbox, which means it’s far less likely to break. And the customer doesn’t have to wrestle with her own front door every time she comes home.

Don’t Wait for the Snap

If you ignore a stiff door, the stress will eventually break something inside the lock mechanism. I’ve seen it happen dozens of times. The gearbox spindle snaps, or the internal cams shatter, and suddenly you’re facing an emergency lockout situation.

Small adjustments now prevent big bills later. It’s that simple.
